The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) F-2, XF-2 prototype, is a derivative of the combat-proven F-16C/D Fighting Falcon being developed between the United States/Lockheed-Martin (40 percent) and Japan/Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (60 percent). The F-2 multi-role fighter is superseding the F-1 aircraft in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. The F-2 features advanced active phased array radar (J/APG-1), waves absorbing materials, an enlarged wing area over the F-16 (25 percent approximately) providing greater fuel load, a more powerful engine, two additional weapon stations over the F-16, and enlarged fuselage and horizontal tails. The majority of avionics and electronic equipment are produced in Japan.

Despite the F-2 is air-to-air and air-to-surface capable, the aircraft will be used for the air-to-surface role specially for anti-ship missions employing ASM-2 missiles. The Japanese government has authorized production of 94 F-2s with the goal of procuring up to 130 aircraft. In 2011 the Japanese government decided to add the JDAM guided bomb capability to the F-2A/B aircraft fleet. The J/APG-2 upgraded radar will be provided to the fleet of F-2 jets beginning in 2015.
